ABOUT GOA

The people of Goa are very friendly and welcoming. Languange is not a problem as apart from konkani, most of the locals are good at Marathi, Hindi and English. A visible difference between the rest of India and Goa is the way colonisation has affected it, as the rest of India was a British colony whereas Goa was a Portuguese colony. The way goans have adopted portuguese culture and are still living it, is amazing. For example, you will still find houses with a rooster made on their roofs (portuguese national bird). Or Postuguese dishes like Cafreal, Xacuti and Vindaloo are still extremly popular in Goa.

History

In 200BC, Goa was a part of the Mauryan Empire of Ashoka the Great.1469, Goa was captured by Muslim Bahmani king, Muhammad Shah II. The portugese captured Goa in 1510.In 1961, Goa is liberated by the Indian Armed Forces (19th Dec is celebrated as Goa Liberation Day). It was earlier a union territory but in 1987, it was declared a state. May 30th is Goa Statehood Day.
